On Wednesday we rode the Metro into D.C. and went to our first stop--the Air and Space Museum. Brett had a lot of fun looking at engines, and Jethro liked it too. One weird thing was when we first went in we had to go through security--metal detector and the bags were scanned and everything. Well, they said there was a knife in our backpack, and we didn't know what they were talking about, except then we figured out that we had brought a butter knife to make our sandwiches. So Brett had to go throw it in this receptacle thing and we wouldn't get it back. Okay, but the weird thing is, Brett had his leatherman on his belt --and that didn't get caught by the security. Brett was very glad that it didn't, because he didn't want to lose it. Before we went into the next museum/Federal building, Brett stashed his leatherman in some plants outside.
Then we went to the Conservatory/Botanical gardens. It was really cool. We didn't stay too long, but it was one of my favorite places to see. They had a jungle room (where Hazel almost fell into the little fountain/creek), a Medicinal Plants room, a Desert room, etc. Very cool.
Then we went and rested for a while in front of the National Archives building. Ethne loved watching the ducks, and the pictures of Hazel dancing around on the edge of the pool is right before she fell into the pool, soaking her pants and shirt completely.

WOW! You guys sure did see a lot of cool things while you were away. Brett was sure smart about hiding his leatherman. I don't know if I would have even thought of that.
That's so funny about you not being able to get your butterknife back. Security measure sure have changed a lot!
I knew you would take great photos! And it is so funny to read your blog and see your family in all of my family's haunts.
My oldest daughter fell in that exact same fountain!
I hope you had fun in DC. I wish I had remembered to tell you about the tight security. But you came up with a very ingenious solution. My husband once forgot his pocket knife and he put it in an empty soda cup and left it on a hidden ledge outside of the Air and Space and no one touched it, thankfully.
Wouldn't it have been funny if you were sitting on the metro and someone said, "Hey, I read your blog"? You would have fallen over, I am sure.
Jane in Maryland (but nowhere near Greenbelt)
